With yesterday being the first off-day of spring training, I decided to do a little bit of an offbeat story on the Yankees pitchers and their tattoos. CC Sabathia, Joba Chamberlain, A.J. Burnett and Brian Bruney — all of whom have a locker within about a 30-foot stretch on the same wall — have tons of tattoos. one day I head Joba ask one of the other guys, “Want to go get tatted up?” in the same tone as I would say, “Want to get lunch?”
Obviously it has nothing to do with how any of them will fare this season, but their takes on why so many tattoos are interesting. I don’t buy A.J. Burnett’s claim that “it feels good after a while,” given that I hate needles so much I passed out after my last tetanus shot. But hey, to each his or her own.
The Yankees will play in Fort Myers tonight. It’s a bit of odd scheduling — a night game more than two hours away with a day game tomorrow? Oh well, the travel crew will be sparse as far as starters go. Chien-Ming Wang is starting, and Xavier Nady is the biggest name position player on the trip.
Tomorrow’s a split-squad game with A.J. Burnett starting the home game and Phil Hughes starting the road game. Robinson Cano, Damaso Marte and Francisco Cervelli should all be in camp this afternoon, and will likely play tomorrow.
